ALMIROS
Almiros, the capital of the same named city is set in the centre of a fruitful disrtict known as «Krokio Pedio». According to the latest census of the area, the population is 8.916 residents including those living in the near by areas of Ano Mavrolofos, Argilochori, Zarkadochori, Mavrolofos, Neochoraki and Perdika. The history of Almiros city begins near the ancient town of Alo, which is very close to Kefalosis, approximately 10km away from Almiros. Alos was a particularly attractive and crowded village known for its harbour and its contribution to the Iranian wars ( battles). Soon after the Byzantine times and the pirate raids the town was reconstructed in today's position , and has been considerably developed. In 1980 Almiros was severely hit by a tremendous earthquake. However, it was totally rebuilt again and it is now a fundamental trade and agricultural centre, as well as an agricultural and tourist area.
